Dance with Dad, Sing with Son

Hema Malini had a great achievement of working as a heroine opposite to Raj Kapoor, his two younger brothers and his two sons! Now, that was indeed covering three generations of heroes on the silver screen. Right from Sapno ka Saudagar(1968) opposite Raj Kapoor, she featured against the youngest brother Shashi in Abhinetri(1970), middle brother Shammi in Andaaz(1971) to Raj’s eldest son Randhir in Haath ki safai(1974) and then much later in the 80s against Raj’s second son Rishi in Ek chadar maili si.

Close to this feat also comes Tanuja who was the second heroine opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapno ka Sadagar(1968) and then went on to feature as a heroine opposite Raj’s eldest son Randhir in Hamrahi(1974); with also featuring against Raj’s youngest brother Shashi in Benzair(1964) and Juari(1968).
Coming out of the Kapoor gambit, we have the Deols, where Papa Dharam and Sonny Sunny romanced with some common heroines in quite a lot of movies in and around the same time. Sridevi sizzled against the pop in movies like Naka Bandi(1989) and around the same time against the son in Joshilay(1989).  Jaya Prada also had the same feat by dancing around with Dharam in Elaan-E-Jung(1989) and with Sunny in Zabardast(1986).
Madhuri Dixit also was not far behind, romancing with Vinod Khanna in Dayavan(1988) and then years later with his son Akshaye Khanna in Mohabbat(1996).
Shilpa Shetty must have forgotten herself that there was a movie called Lal Badshah in 1997 where she was the heroine against Amitabh Bachchan. And Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh’s son and her hero in Phir Milenge(2004), will not be the first one to remind her of that. Abhishek was also seen shaking his legs with Shilpa in Dostana (2008) as well, where Shilpa had an item number in a special appearance.
There have been some interesting characterization changes in some artists as their career progressed as well. Saira Banu’s hero in Junglee(1961) and Bluff Master(1963), Shammi Kapoor, went on to play her father in Zameer(1975)!! Sanjeev Kumar, in and around the same time with Jaya Bhaduri, played her father in Parichay(1972), lover in Anamika(1973), husband in Koshish(1974) and father-in-law in Sholay(1975)! Rakhi Gulzar, in 1982, was seen in parallel, playing Amitabh Bachchan’s love interest in Bemisaal and his mother in Shakti!!
And last, but not the least, our evergreen Dev Anand sahib, romanced Geeta Bali in Jaal (1952) and then two decades later, her niece Yogeeta Bali in Benarasi Babu(1972). Wish Yogeeta had a daughter, who could  feature in one of Dev sahab’s last released movies to complete the full three generations.

  1. On a different plane, Naushad sahab's longevity as a music director is amply proven by the fact that he gave music in films of Noor Jehan in his early days and was the mussic director of Taj mahal, in which the grand daughter of Noor Jahan, Sonya jahaan was the leading lady!

    1. Yes, very interesting. Also reminds me of O P Nayyar, who gave music to Raj Kapoor starrer Do Ustaad in 1959 and then years later, he gave music in Nishchay(1991), where Raj Kapoor's grand daughter Karishma Kapoor was the heroine.
